The ecclesiastical trial of our diocesan Bishop Charles Bennison Jr. took place the week of June 9th. The panel of nine judges will deliver a verdict (and a sentence if a guilty verdict is returned) within a month.
The Bishop was charged with "engaging in conduct unbecoming a member of the clergy" based on allegations submitted in 2006 to the national Church's Review Committee by the then Presiding Bishop, Frank Griswold.
The Standing Committee of the diocese (the elected ecclesiastical authority) has released a statement concerning the trial. Here is a section of it:
"The occasion of the ecclesiastical trial of the Rt. Rev. Charles E. Bennison, Bishop of the Diocese of Pennsylvania, is a sad and difficult time for the Diocese. We encourage all members of the Diocese to hold in prayer Bishop Bennison and his family, those who will testify to the court, the nine judges, others involved in the trial, and all organizations, groups, and individuals in the Diocese of Pennsylvania.
